I managed to duck down to Perth for a not-so-quiet weekend over Easter. I welcomed the slightly cooler and much less humid weather, and was so happy that all my neglected pairs of skinny jeans got to come out, come out to play! A different colour for each day!
My mission on Saturday was to procure myself a suitable birthday outfit, and so I hotfooted it down to the Black Beret boutique in Mount Lawley. They carry such an amazing selection of clothing from the hottest Australian designers – it was all I could do to stay focussed! Well, I admit, not only did I successfully pick out a stunning dress for my birthday (can’t wait!) but I did walk away with a little extra something-something-you-know-to-wear-to-that-wedding-in-December-yeah-that’s-right.

Bits and Bobs – Easter Edition

A quick and objective-filled weekend back in Perth. What were my objectives? Find myself an outfit worthy of my 30th birthday celebration, eat some of Mumsy’s finest home-cooked specialties, and stuff myself silly with dim sum. Tick, tick and tick!
1. My David Austen roses thriving in Jinn’s care.
2. A highly successful day at Black Beret in Mount Lawley. Not one but TWO Rachel Gilbert dresses are now in my possession! (Stay tuned for an outfit post from the day!)
3, 4, 5. Heading out for dinner on Saturday night. Not at the newly opened Jamie’s Italian though! We thought we might try our luck for a sneaky post-dinner dessert, but there were people still queuing for dinner at 9:00pm!
6, 7. Trying out the highly popular Taiwanese dessert place in Northbridge, Meet Fresh. So Asian. So good.
8, 9. My furbaby.
10, 11. Chilling with records and tea.
12, 13. Easter Monday breakfast at ours with a sleepy Gabs.

My birthday suit – Le Fanciulle

This week’s fab birthday outfit is brought to you by the ladies from Le Fanciulle, aka Steph and Trish. Here’s a rundown from the lovely duo themselves about their chosen look…
Cobalt blue with neon accents – yes please! And snacks? I love snacks! Interestingly, as we all belong to the Perth medico-sphere as well as the blogosphere (me a relative newcomer), we have somewhat orbited each others’ existence and only realised who each other were fairly recently! These sartorially-savvy beauties are steady faces on the Perth fashion scene and have a blog that I’m a huge fan of. To cap it off they have quite a number of achievements under their belts – namely, they were recent nominees for Betts Best Fashion Blogger of the Year 2013 and were also chosen to take part in the Perth Fashion Festival’s 30 Days of Restyle 2012. Phew! Busy bees!

This girl – Dana Tanamachi

Dana Tanamachi’s work just makes me swoon. I frequently dabble in freehand lettering (I was most prolific during my school and uni days as it whiled away boring classes and lectures like nothing else) but I cannot compare to this jaw-droppingly talented girl!
Dana is a Brooklyn-based graphic designer and letterer and the creative force behind design & lettering boutique, Tanamachi Studio. She has an amazing resume of clients, including such big names as Google, Yahoo!, Rugby Ralph Lauren, The Ace Hotel, Tommy Hilfiger, West Elm, and Bloomingdale’s as well as creating custom covers for O and Time magazines.

The latest edition of Kinfolk Magazine recently arrived on my doorstep. Kinfolk is one of my favourite reads – a stunning combination of beautiful design, gorgeous images and well written articles. It is created by a group of like-minded creatives with the idea to foster small gatherings and encourage people to reconnect with each other in real life (as opposed to online). We have every edition except the first (sadly sold out!) and recently subscribed for a year. I really love the photos and the style of this issue – dedicated to ice cream of all things!

Cable Beach again

We went back to enjoy Cable Beach on my last evening in Broome. I had vowed to watch the sunset from a different beach each night I was in Broome, and true to my word we saw the sun set from a different part of Cable Beach to before. We stayed out late, well after the sun had set, deep in conversation and watching the sky turn from red to black and then erupt into a magnificent starscape. Beautiful scenery, warm nights, a sweet smelling breeze and excellent company – what could be better in life? – Jinn

A visit to the Croc Park!

I’m writing this really quickly because the longer I look at these pictures, I get a rising sense of impending doom and start experiencing palpitations. The tour at Malcolm Douglas’ Crocodile Park starts off with a little wander around the park on your own, meeting the cute feathered and fluffy inhabitants of this park, which lulls you into a rather false sense of happiness and oh-isn’t-Australia’s-fauna-just-so-beautiful-and-BENIGN. Everyone then gathers to the main pond where you pass around the most gorgeous baby crocodiles (of course with their mouths deftly tied shut to save you from certain digit amputation) and once again everyone coos and poses smiling with the tiny reptilian offspring. They’re surprisingly soft to the touch! In the nearby algae-covered pools, you start to see that the surface of the water is actually patterned with the ridges of many spines, just lying in wait.
Then – it’s feeding time. This was the most thrilling and amazing part of the tour. The guides fearlessly enter the enclosures and practically taunt these giant crocodiles with fish, making them launch themselves into the air to show off their size and sheer strength. They are utterly ferocious and brutal even to their own kind, and what makes them so fascinating is just how deathly still they are just moments before the attack. You will literally not see it coming.
I give this place a rating of five bajillion stars out of ten. Take plenty of sunscreen and water, and wear something breezy. And please say hi to my friend the “barking” owl! He actually says “woof woof”, that’s his natural cry, and he and I had a stimulating conversation, a heart to heart even. Nice to know someone really gets me.

My birthday suit!

Haha! Got you looking didn’t I?
Well, this year is the big year. It’s the year I hit the big you-know-what (has a three in it, rhymes with Bertie, come on work with me people)…It’s the year I turn thirty! Yeah, I’m just gonna say it. Because I refuse to join that pessimistic, doom and gloom, it’s-all-downhill-from-here club! What rubbish!
To tell you the truth, I’m feeling better than ever and I still feel like I’m “on the way up” so to speak. I think what’s changed for me in a big way over the last few years is that I’ve stopped trying to be what others want me to be and also learnt to accept myself for who I am – my strengths, my weaknesses, my wonky right ear. Looking back, I realise that I’d been a personality-contortionist, trying to fit myself into wrong and uncomfortable shapes in the hopes of pleasing people. I was also painfully shy, too terrified to say anything in case someone disagreed or worse, laughed at me. But turns out my personality is just as inflexible as my hamstrings of steel (it takes me a whole hour of warm ups to touch my toes, don’t laugh!) but it’s taken me some time to find it and then gain the confidence to just put it out there and say who-gives-a-flying-duck what anyone says.
There. Catharsis over. Now you know I have a wonky ear and am that person in the back row at Pilates who can’t do a proper roll-down.
Now what I actually started off trying to tell you guys, is this is my dream outfit for my upcoming birthday festivity! I would usually go something more light and pretty, or quirky and boyish, but this time I’m fantasising of an outfit that conjures up the word soiree, a bit glam, a bit sexy, and dare I say, a bit more mature. But not mature in a needing-a-hip-replacement way but in a more self-assured, strong alpha female way. You know, the type that’s not afraid to turn a few heads and cause a bit of a stir.

Peachy keen

Excuse the tatty hair in these photos – Jinn had just touched down in Broome, I’d come straight from work after spending a rather sweaty day travelling back from Kununurra, and rather than going back to my apartment to set his bags down and rest he said, “Allons-y!” So off to Cable Beach we went to catch the sunset! So this little shoot was pretty impromptu but we couldn’t help but take advantage of the peachy skies offsetting my totally unplanned peachy outfit. 🙂
This was actually the beginning of an amazing weekend that I just didn’t want to end. Not only was my hubby/BFF/accomplice here with me, but also someone who understands my Insta-obsession (don’t look at me like you don’t know what I mean!). I’ve not yet encountered anyone up here who shares my addiction so there have been countless social situations and dinners where I’ve practically had to sit on my own hands to prevent myself from taking a photo of my food or a gratuitous self-pic! We took so many photos in just three little days, so let’s hope my trigger-happy fingers have been appeased for now…until Jinn’s next visit of course!
