First things first, why is no one called Horatio these days? It’s one of those cool old-school names which has sadly fallen from popularity, like Chauncey, Mabel, and Hattie…But I digress! (I may have read a few too many Enid Blyton books as a child…Omg, there’s another amazing name, Enid!)
We hadn’t done a whole lot of touristy stuff in London even though we’d already been there a few days, so we thought we’d take ourselves on our own little whirlwind tour of the sights – Trafalgar Square was our first stop, then Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus, and then I joined Jinn (read: got dragged along) on an Arsenal Emirates Stadium for a tour with Charlie George, an ex-player and legend of the soccer team. Do I sound like I know what I’m talking about? It’s because I’ve been brainwashed/educated by Jinn who is an absolute diehard Arsenal fan. Last time we were in London we went to an Arsenal match and I actually thought we were going to die when tempers and overly passionate team-patriotism boiled over at the game. So at least this time round my life wasn’t endangered in the name of soccer!
It was actually a pretty freezing day for an on-foot tour as you might be able to tell from my less than discrete turtleneck. I absolutely love playsuits so I decided to try out their cold weather cousins, overalls! And amongst all the cute spring dresses all the London stores were selling (Spring??? You call this Spring??? Madness…) I found this gorgeous Zara jumper which begged to be worn with my newly acquired overalls. Jinn looked pretty dapper himself I must say!

The zebra and the Shard

Just shortly before going on holiday, we watched a Doctor Who episode that featured this glass-clad skyscraper as the headquarters for an alien organisation that was trapping people in its WiFi and converting them into energy (make sense?). It was quite an exciting episode and I can’t quite seem to translate that into plain words, but that might have something to do with the pyrotechnics and motorcycle ride straight up the side of the Shard that made it more thrilling.
I was half expecting to see Matt Smith aka the Doctor during our visit to this glistening modern day pyramid. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, but we still had a great view over the centre of London city – we were so high up that even large structures such as the Tower Bridge were dwarfed! See if you can spot some landmarks in our photos below! Also, I’m not quite sure what possessed me, perhaps I was having such a good time or it’s quite possible that the cold had cut off all circulation to my brain and I’d become delirious – but I decided that it was perfectly appropriate to have a little dance around the viewing platform. The incriminating evidence is below!

Red letter day – Hyde Park

This red dress is one of my favourites. Gorgeous colour, great shape and fabric, and a skirt that falls just so. So why does it often hang neglected and overlooked in my closet? Well, this dress has “history”. I bought it last year for one express purpose – for an exam. And not just any old exam. For the single most scariest exam I’ve ever done in my whole entire life. No joke. Just thinking about the whole process leading up to it and the day itself is giving me the heebie jeebies. Thank God I passed, but even so the entire experience was so traumatic that my hand would try not to linger over its hanger whenever I came across it in my wardrobe, and I’d always find an excuse to wear something else.
Well, it’s been eight months since that-day-which-shall-no-longer-be-mentioned and I decided that it was time that the curse be lifted. And once I slipped this dress back on, I realised what a fool I’d been to let it languish behind lesser dresses. It’s effortlessly elegant, can be dressed up or down, and is so so soooo comfortable.
On another note, this was one of the few days during our holiday that I could venture safely out without a heavy coat in tow. We’d just eaten at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal (for free!) and just hopped across the street into Hyde Park to enjoy the snippet of sunshine and admire the daffodils and giNORmous white swans. They’re twice the size of our black swans! The sunshine, the greenery and the sugar high we were still on made for a lovely, laughter-filled afternoon (probably more like giggles and snorts) and off we trotted on our merry way.

Barely had I recovered from the fun whirlwind of cake and conversations that was my birthday party, then we were packing our bags (in a very frantic manner) and flying off to London for the first leg our holiday. It was the perfect way to celebrate entering a “new age of maturity” (haw haw haw, I just lol-led at that, meh!) and also to attend a very good friend’s wedding in France! Double yay!
Jinn booked us in (as a surprise!) to stay at the gorgeous Langham Hotel, which is just around the corner from the string of shops along Oxford St. Great views over London, fluffy feather pillows, and countless shops just a wee hop-step-jump away – ooh yeah!

As you can see we’ve been tearing around London like lunatics trying to soak in all the sights and eat as many pastries as possible, all whilst resisting the urge to curl up into a small but very warm ball, especially when some nights have been just one little degree Celsius! And remember I’ve been basking (sweating) in 35 degree Broome weather up til now! Jinn organised a sneaky birthday surprise for me and reserved us a room at the luxurious Langham Hotel which was just beautiful and also dangerously close to all the shopping on Oxford St. He knows me too well…
There will be many many more posts to come, I promise. But whilst there are that many things to see and numerous cupcakes to eat plus a wedding in France this Saturday (eek! So soon!), I’m afraid the posts will be a little sporadic. That, and I may possibly lose a finger or two if it gets any colder!

Checking out the Broome markets…

As you may have gathered from this previous post, I kinda went a little nuts-o in Gorman during my blink-and-you’ll-miss-me visit to Perth a few weeks back. I instantly gravitated towards this sweet dress with its winning combination of linen (for the heat and humidity of Broome!), bold stripes and bright colours. I wasn’t 100% sure about the neon sandals (ankle straps tend to make my legs look even stumpier than usual!) but Jinn made me buy them and now I’m totally in love with them.
The markets here are still a little small and the crowd a little sluggish as we’re not quite into the full swing of tourist season – but that made for some relaxing ambling about, with no queues or crowds or chance of getting my new sandals trod on! There were some lovely stalls displaying locally made jewellery, art, and foods which demonstrate Broome’s colourful and very multicultural past – there were offerings of Thai, Indian, Chinese and freshly made doughnuts, just to name a few!
My absolute favourite jeweller was Debbie Thomas of Broome Beads who also has a store in Chinatown along Johnny Chi lane. Her delicately crafted boab trees captured my heart and were exactly what I was looking for. These beautiful and often imposing trees are found throughout the Kimberley and their majestic yet loveable, potbellied appearance has truly captivated me. I just can’t get enough of them and I still find myself face-planting the car window when we drive by a cluster of them, just to get a glimpse of them silhouetted in the sunlight, standing tall above the ochre dirt.
Meet my friend, Kuria! He’s from Papua New Guinea and it’s no overstatement for me to say that he is one of THE best doctors I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.

Jinn’s visit to lil Broome-town!

The day I’d been hangin’ out for what seemed like an eternity finally arrived – my Jinn came to visit me! He’s my hubby and bestie all in one so being apart is pretty difficult. Thank goodness for webcams so we can at least speak face to face regularly.
Jinn was only here for four days and three nights so we certainly maximised our time together, squeezing in as many sights and get-togethers out of the precious hours we had. Here’s a snippet of our fish-eye fun-times whilst soaking up the sunshine and undeniable beauty of Town Beach in Broome.
Oh, and not only is Jinn my BFF forevs but also photographer extraordinaire and proud new father of a Canon 6D. Hence, more photos and outfit posts to follow! Stay tuned…

Malaysia photo diary…aka Food Safari!

So we were recently in Malaysia for a whirlwind trip to finally wind up the month long festivities that was Jinn’s little sister’s wedding! Crazy hey? But between dinners and meet-and-greets (Jinn’s parents both have massive extended families) we managed to fit in a spot of shopping, sight-seeing and as you can see – a whole stack of food! Malaysia is well-known for its culinary delights and boy oh boy I tried my bestest to sample them all!
Top 10 things to eat in Malaysia:
- Char kway teow – flat rice noodles stir-fried with delicious whatnots like Chinese sausage and scrambled egg
- Wonton mee or its East Malaysian sister kolo mee – thin egg noodles that are cooked just al dente served with a delectable soy-based sauce and little pork dumplings
- Roti canai – Indian flat bread that is just oh so fluffy accompanied by curries-of-the-day (Great for breakfast! Really!)
- Teh tarik – another delicious Indian concoction, black tea sweetened with condensed milk
- Laksa – which differs in taste depending which region it comes from – Sarawak, Penang, or curry laksa – they’re all good!
- Chee cheong fan – so simple yet oh so mindbendingly awesome, rolls of thick flat rice noodles served with plum-based and chilli sauces and a sprinkling of sesame seeds
- Ice kacang and ice chendol – icy desserts in a coconutty sauce, perfect for the hot humid weather
- Poh piah – simmered local turnip wrapped with chilli sauce in a thin rice flour skin
- Muah chee – sticky rice dumpling filled with crunchy peanuts mixed with white sugar and sesame seeds, one of my personal faves!
- Nasi lemak – coconut rice, spicy tiny deep fried fish accompanied with a curry
- Satay – self-explanatory and universally worshiped by all
- Bah kut teh – juicy pieces of pork spare rib cooked in a herbal soup and served with a bowl of steaming white rice
- And don’t forget to sample the local tropical fruits – jackfruit, rambutan, longan, mangosteen…and if you’re brave – durian!
Huh? Did I say top 10? Well, there’s just that much amazing food to eat, I’m sure there’s still some that I’ve missed. What are your must-eat foods that you would travel the world for?

Burgundy + lace + flower

It was unexpectedly a bit chilly on Friday night for the Illuminites night market so I had to bust out some stuff that I had put into my “Winter” pile. In fact, the weather has been a bit temperamental of late, so much so that it barely feels like Christmas is near! To me, Christmastime is usually verging on swelteringly hot so to have to wear anything other than a floaty little dress is kind of odd.
Talking about Christmas, have we all done our Christmas shopping yet? I know I haven’t…But I’ve always been the kind of person to leave assignments/piano practice/exam study to the last minute – yeah, living on the edge…not…!
P.S. The vintage tooled leather bag was a find from Bluebird Vintage at the Leederville Carnival. To be honest, I was kind of “over” tooled leather bags, but this one caught my eye and I couldn’t let it go. 🙂

The shoot before the storm…Part #2

The weekend has been a crazy whirl of rehearsing for wedding, showing relatives around Perth who are visiting for the wedding, making cupcakes for the wedding, and ultimately finally attending the wedding!!!! (Did I mention Eu-Jinn’s sister got married last weekend?) There will be plenty of nuptial-related snaps to come this week…but I’m still recovering this morning so you’ll just have to wait…zzz…
Oh, and before I slip back into my dreams, I can reveal that my next project with Steven Chew will be a video! (Pressure’s on now Steven…) Keep posted for that one, it’s going to be a cracker!
