As usual, this week has been super busy (when has it ever not been?), especially having to sort out loads of things before the big move to Broome in February. Couple that with a full-on work roster, and suddenly it’s just two short weeks until I move. Our favourite housemate Schnooks has had a pretty big week himself. We hereby present a special edition of Bits and bobs – The Schnooks Edition!
1. My little Mr Orange. He loves a good snuggle. And we all love snuggling him!
2 +3. Even the cutest of dudes has to keep clean. I’d heard that cats often turn into little balls of fury when attempting to be bathed, so the very first time we tried this we covered ourselves from head to toe to protect us from any potential scratching. We should’ve known him better. He’s such a cool customer. He clearly doesn’t enjoy his showers, but seems to understand the necessity of it all and sits there, hunched in the corner, making a few sad mews occasionally when the water gets too cold. Then he gets released into the warm sunshine and proceeds to lick himself for hours until he’s satisfied with the result.
4. Sunny days.
5. He can’t stop playing Angry Birds Star Wars. He likes the Chewbacca bird the best.
6. Schnooks is incredibly vain. We had to run this photo by his editorial team to make sure he was happy with the angle of the lighting, the pose, the way his fur colour turned out, etc. So fussy.
7 + 8. Typical artistic nonsense. Such a poser.

So we were recently in Malaysia for a whirlwind trip to finally wind up the month long festivities that was Jinn’s little sister’s wedding! Crazy hey? But between dinners and meet-and-greets (Jinn’s parents both have massive extended families) we managed to fit in a spot of shopping, sight-seeing and as you can see – a whole stack of food! Malaysia is well-known for its culinary delights and boy oh boy I tried my bestest to sample them all!
Top 10 things to eat in Malaysia:
Huh? Did I say top 10? Well, there’s just that much amazing food to eat, I’m sure there’s still some that I’ve missed. What are your must-eat foods that you would travel the world for?

If you haven’t met her yet – this is my fresh sweet-smelling amazing new niece, Gabrielle! She’s nine weeks old now. I know it’s said time and time again, but they really do change at an incredible pace at this age. From tiny squishy packages, eyes barely open and limbs held tightly to themselves, to still small beings that fit so perfectly in the crook of your arm but start to interact with the people and world around them – sometimes quietly observing, faces almost comically serious (what could possibly be worrying you that much at the ripe old age of two months old?!), sometimes engaging fully with smiles and coos, kicking out with those little chubby legs of theirs in glee.
There’s nothing quite like looking into the faces and eyes of children. To me it brings me back to the core of all things and reminds me of what true and unbridled love and joy really can be. Emotions untainted by ulterior motives, prospects of material gain, past hurts, deep insecurities – things that are “learnt” – and of course, their fearless ability to find happiness in the simple pleasure of experiencing new things. This new year I resolve to love, live and learn more like a child does – with my heart wide open, empty of prejudice and full of curiosity.
What are your new year’s resolutions?

Summer finally decided to unleash its glorious but scorching self upon us on Christmas Day, and in full force! Christmas for me is a typically relaxed day spent with all the gorgeous people I love. The morning began with our annual ritual of present opening with my immediate family, and I have to say I scored…big time. Jinn was given the task of buying my present on behalf of the entire family and the poor thing was racking his brains so hard – I wasn’t exactly lacking in anything since only recently coming back from that very fruitful holiday in New York I keep mentioning! He’s also very bad at keeping secrets. So I thought I had it all figured out when I saw a shopping bag from one of my favourite stores (Atlas Divine in Leederville!) peeking out from under a chair when I got home one day. But honestly, nothing prepared me for the boom-bap-pow of those shiny gold Super Duper Strength sunglasses from Karen Walker’s latest Fantastique eyewear range that popped out from that unassuming little package with my name on it. All I can say is – Thank. you. I. Love. Them. And. I. LOVE. YOU. ALL. !.
What followed was a food dream filled with beautiful dishes definitely befitting the occasion (Jason served up five meats at his “little” Christmas barbecue, I certainly got my protein load for the next month or so). Thankfully there was time for a quick dip before Jason’s dinner to help get the digestive system going and burn off a few calories, and of course play with my cousin’s underwater camera! She usually uses it to photograph fish/turtles/rays/sharks when she goes scuba diving but we were more than happy to be the wildlife on this occasion. 🙂
There’s nothing quite like days like these that bring everyone together for the sole purpose of enjoying each other’s company and for sharing gifts, stories, hugs and laughs. I cherish every single moment and find that as I get older (wow, I’m not that geriatric!) they mean more and more to me.

Every year the little church in our neighbourhood organises the most awesome street party for us all to enjoy! The promise of real camel rides draws many people, young and old, as well as the good ol’ sausage sizzle and Christmas carol sing-a-long. Our little section of street was completely closed off to traffic and the kids let loose upon the bouncy castles, face painting and very well behaved camels that good-naturedly carted bunches of clamouring children (myself included!) up and down. The experience is not quite like horse-riding – for one, they’re really really tall, and secondly their walking motion is a somewhat disconcerting swaying action! Not quite life-flashing-before-my-eyes material however, especially since one particular camel kept frequently stopping to sample the local foliage.
As the sun was going down, the appreciative and happy crowd gathered to listen and sing along to carols as the church band played. The day’s festivities ended with a resounding rendition of “Feliz Navidad” (I don’t know why but I love that song!) and my family and I settled down to a deliciously Mum-cooked meal of a Burmese chicken noodle dish called moke thee accompanied by my staple carrot salad. (Don’t worry, I got the recipe! And I promise to share it with you all soon!)
Do you have any Christmas traditions? Or any grand plans this year?
P.S. How cute is Nathanael? He’s my nephew and he turns five today! Happy birthday Nattynoonah!

This day four years ago, Jinn and I got married! We both can’t believe it’s gone that quickly – I suppose that’s a good sign right? Time flies when you’re having fun, and all that? Well, I can’t disagree with that, it certainly has been fun! We’ve had some great times – travelling to places like Japan, Spain, and the latest trip to America, and enjoying our favourite pastimes such as cups of coffee on lazy Sunday afternoons, decorating our house in what you could best describe as a cross between Scandinavian mid-century retro goodness, egging each other on whilst online shopping, and of course our favourite one of all time, singing “We Built This City” really loudly in “perfect” harmony. It’s been pretty awesome – here’s to more years and crazy singing to come!

And this is us now…! ♥

Over the weekend, Jinn’s little sister got married! After some oddly cold days preceding, the weather truly delivered on Sunday, showing off the blue blue skies that Perth is so famed for. The day’s festivities began with a traditional Chinese tea ceremony during which the betrothed couple serve tea to their respective new families as a symbol of respect and acceptance. After an exercise in quick change the white wedding finally took place! A lovely heartfelt ceremony (punctuated by appropriately timed loud cheers from the Australia vs South Africa cricket match nearby) saw tears flow from both the bride and groom’s eyes as well as many of the close friends and family gathered.
It was a beautiful day topped off by many a rug being cut on that dance floor late into the night!

Meet Schnooks! He’s our furry little orange friend and adopted son. And when I say adopted – I mean HE adopted US!
We moved into our home around two years ago, which is nestled in a lovely neighbourhood lined with gorgeous old 1930s character houses. It was (and is!) the home of our dreams – filled with warmth and the scent of good family memories gone by, as well as having good architectural bones with space for us to express our own creativity.
As eager new homeowners we would often spend time in the garden pottering around trying to make things just so. (We didn’t know much about gardening back then, so essentially we managed to make it look like Crater-ville.) Anyhoo, whilst pottering we noticed that we were often not alone – we were frequently accompanied by a rather aloof but very pretty ginger cat.

Bit by bit we went from suspicious I’ve-got-one-eye-on-you to begrudging neighbours to polite acknowledgement and somehow from that to friends who eagerly awaited each other’s company. Gardening just wasn’t gardening without him. But I assumed that his name was Lucky and that he belonged to the family a couple of doors down because the mum of that household would stand outside and yell, “Luckyyyyyyyy-yyyyy!” every evening. Although I was a professed dog-person and somewhat cat-avoider (I regret that now), deep in my heart I pretended that his name was Schnooks and that he was really ours.
However, one evening I was sitting outside with Schnooks and, dare I say, feeding him tuna when as usual the cry “Luckyyyyyy!” filled the air. Schnooks didn’t move. He just carried on purring and looked at me like, “What?” or maybe more like, “More tuna please!”. And we both watched as a Russian blue cat dashed across our front yard only to be greeted and picked up by our neighbour. Tick. Tick. Tick. I came to the slow but very happy realisation that Schnooks was really Schnooks (not just in my dreams), a free spirit (the preferable term to stray cat) and he had most determinedly decided that he would be part of our little family!
Nowadays you will find him around our home (usually on the bed!), sprawled out on the rug, sleeping under the bushes in our backyard, or sitting patiently under “his” tree waiting for us to get home. He is an affectionate soul who actually comes with us on little walks up and down the street (I never knew cats did that!), and brings us “presents” (read rats, sometimes alive) to show us how much he loves us. We love our home, but we love it infinitely more now because we have Schnooks.

We recently hosted a baby shower for my sister-in-law, Rani. My OTHER sister-in-law, Rachel, made this sweet bunting. So gorgeous! So talented!
Here’s the lovely lady herself.
She’s promised (read “been coerced”) to do a “how-to” guest post about her bunting in the near future – so keep your eyes peeled!
I thought I’d share a few more snaps from that sunny day! Yummy food, happy ladies, and of course – cucumber sandwiches, without which no high tea would be complete. See if you can spot the beautiful Rani dressed in red below. Baby Gabrielle has since been born, both mum and bub are doing well – and yes, photos are forthcoming :).
Hope you all had a lovely and re-energising weekend!
