The Silver LiningLight Up Leederville!

Over the weekend Sarah and I turned on our community spirit and went to the Light Up Leederville Carnival. We visited last year and this year we went with great expectations. Happily, they were met!
This year around 45,000 people flocked to join in the festivities, almost double last year’s attendance. Despite the swell in numbers there was only a slight increase in the crowdedness, a great testament to the fantastic genius of the organising committee. There were activities for all, from children’s rides and activities to handicraft and vintage stores, as well as a pop-up Little Creatures bar. To add to the mix, our usual favourite Leederville shops were open too!
The highlight as always was the big red party bus – the heart of the carnival, a hub of awesome pumpin’ music and live performances. The night was crowned by the lighting of the Christmas lights on Oxford St and lots of confetti and dancing in the street!
Well done to Leederville Connect for organising such a great event. You guys rock!

As awesome as these sunnies are, I sadly don’t get to wear them all that often! I suppose they are a little OTT for work, and since I work 71.4% of the week that only leaves me 28.6% of my week left to flaunt them! I finished work a tad bit early last Wednesday arvo and was clearly a bit bored whilst waiting for Jinn to get home, hence the raiding of the wardrobe which led to this outfit post. We only ended up moseying down the road to grab burgers but hey…a girl’s gotta have a bit of fun sometimes, no?

Nobody knows

Now I don’t know why, but I just haven’t been a huge fan of denim jackets – until now…Maybe it’s because their often boxy shapes tend to be rather unflattering on me or they conjure up these kinds of images in my mind (you know, the bad kind of 90s fashion that is not experiencing a revival). But I just couldn’t walk past these prettily embroidered shoulders of this Nobody creation! My first attempt at trying it on wasn’t such a roaring success but with a little help from the lovely staff at Merge Subiaco this little baby eventually came home with me and boy has it made itself comfortable! Paired with a simple lace dress and my soft-as-butter shoes from Sydney label, The Horse, this has fast become my favourite summer outfit.

Ootong and Lincoln

Having a friend visiting from overseas forces you to pull out all the stops and show them the really best places in Perth. Ootong and Lincoln fits the bill in my opinion. Quite simply, my favourite cafe in Fremantle. Located slightly off the main cafe strip, it is nonetheless always bustling at any time of day, serving amazing food, great drinks, and even carbonated tap water (if you know which button to press!). Absolutely everything is made on site from the freshest of local organic ingredients with the yummiest of results.

The Kinfolk Table

After much anticipation and many a bated breath The Kinfolk Table finally landed on our doorstep the other day. Most of you will know that Jinn and I are both massive Kinfolk fans and have been eagerly buying their magazine since they first started up (aside from the elusive first issue – argh!). The Kinfolk Table is a beautiful combination of gorgeous photography, inspiring recipes from all around the world and the stories behind them. As always, the emphasis is on small gatherings and genuine relationships. Their very words sum up an attitude to life that I aspire to – to “show up at life’s feast with an open heart and a genuine spirit”. This is a book crammed full of an abundance of simple, home cooked food that is real, tasty and unpretentious.

Twilight Hawkers Market

The Twilight Hawkers Markets are back, heralding the start of warm-weather good times in Perth. Every Friday night, a multitude of different food stalls harking from many international cuisines descends on Forrest Place in the city ready to feed the masses.
It’s a great option if you’re looking for something different to eat before a night out in Northbridge, or even whilst you browse shops in Perth city. We sampled the South American pupusas, corn tortillas with a light fluffy texture, stuffed with cheese, refried beans and pork (yummo!) and I could not walk past the Vietnamese stall without ordering a banh mi, a crusty bread roll filled with pork belly, fresh coriander, slices of cucumber and carrot, and some crazy magic sauce that makes you feel like you could eat a hundred more banh mis! A lime coconut icy pole from La Paleta ended the night’s grazing most perfectly!
I’m making a beeline for that bratwurst next time! (Hmm, that came out sounding weird…) But, for serious, I’m definitely going to be back! If you go, will you save a spot in that eternally long Argentinian Barbecue line for me?

MYRE {not a typo!}

Wandering into the recently opened MYRE building, I was instantly hit by a wave of nostalgia. Rummaging through sales troughs for bedsheets and saying “I’m bored!” about 20 times a minute. My Mum would wander blissfully through the rows upon rows of Royal Doulton china and miniature figurines made in the likenesses of young girls in flowing gowns and flower crowns, usually stroking the heads of ducks or small puppies. We’ve all been there.
MYRE is a fresh new concept store based in the recently closed Fremantle MYER store. The old lino and carpets are the same but the new inhabitants have completely transformed and revitalised this space. Housed within are exclusively locally grown talents offering a wide variety of wares, from clothing to chocolates to furniture.
As you enter, you are greeted by gorgeous blooms and bouquets of florist, Matthew Landers. A gentle left takes you to artisan chocolatier and all-round lovely lady Sue Lewis (read more about her here). This is a perfect moment to pick up a freshly brewed cold-pour coffee served over ice. Choose from coffee beans ethically sourced from Ethiopia or Columbia (my favourite was the Ethiopian blend, sweet and mild, whilst Jinn favoured the much stronger-bodied Columbian blend). You must of course buy some of the exquisitely handmade chocolates, made from the finest and freshest organic ingredients, with some often unexpected flavour combinations, such as strawberry with jasmine, Manjimup truffle, or even Vegemite! Buy some for now and some for later.
Meander around the store and take in the likes of Jarrad Seng’s photography that capture Iceland’s beautiful volcanic rivers from above. You can also find yourself some mighty fine threads, new or vintage, from places like Common Ground, Kate and Abel (who also run the in-house cafe), and Amicus Collective.
I can’t wait for the whole complex to be reopened. There’s promise of a floor dedicated to production and even a rooftop bar! Stay posted…But in the meanwhile come show some local-small-business love at this awesome new space!

Loco Locals

Last Friday we went down to William St for the opening of Outre Gallery’s new exhibition Loco Locals, featuring a number of local Perth artists showing off their mad skillz and wares. It was a busy evening! The already cosy Outre Gallery was jam packed full of art fans eager to see new works from their favourite artists. As usual, I couldn’t tear my eyes away from Kyle Hughes-Odgers’ pieces and had to remind myself about our hefty mortgage and Jinn’s looming 30th birthday to prevent myself from puchasing (another) one! However, all the pieces of art were top notch and I’m sure they won’t stay unpurchased for long.
The exhibition finishes on 1st November so hurry on down and check it out before it’s too late!

It’s okay to wear a splash of colour to work! It’s nice to get out of the habit of wearing all black, particularly now that the sun is shining and the days are getting longer. And once again it’s super-cheap-ASOS-trousers to the rescue! They fit perfectly and fulfil all my workwear criteria (read all about them here), namely style, comfort and mobility all in one. Particularly when paired with these boyish loafers, I’m all set for a day at work with the kiddies!

Piccolo’s Corner

The other day, I finished my morning shift at work a little bit early and decided to meet Jinn at our new favourite local cafe, Piccolo’s Corner. This cosy little gem is located in the leafy suburb of West Leederville, just a stone throw’s away from our place.
Enjoy a cooked brekky with a beverage of your choice (so far I’ve had their coffee and chai latte – both are ace) inside their quirky interior or sunny garden, both characterised by a mixture of vintage bric-a-brac and cutting edge street art. Get there early on the weekend or be prepared to wait in line!
