These lovely photos were taken up in the Dandenong Ranges of Victoria, the beautiful setting of a very good friend’s wedding. We snuck out whilst waiting for the bride to arrive to do a little prancing around the gorgeous greenery! The wedding was attended by all my besties from school, and one of them so kindly pointed out that this dress was reminiscent of our old school summer uniform! (See what you think here) I laughed when she said so as I did see the similarities, but I’d like to think my style has evolved a just a little since then! Certainly the untied hair “beyond the collar” and earrings that break the “plain studs” rule are a slight improvement!

I’m not really one to wear miniskirts but I completely fell for this gorgeous twirly number by American Apparel, so much so that I also got it in black! Poufy enough to look playful rather than skanky, a look I generally avoid. And the lilac colour goes surprisingly well against all those bright neon colours that are sweeping through stores this summer! Now this Karen Walker top arrived (oh how I love KW, have you noticed yet? She’s like my girlfriend) and I instantly realised I was waaaaay too short for it (story of my life). Well, a quick roll up of the sleeves and nipping in of the waist – et voila!

American Apparel does some of the greatest basics. This top is perfectly cropped and fitted, perfect for a whole bunch of my high-waisted bottoms and right on midriff-baring trend (for when I finally find my six-pack). But anyhow, this outfit took me perfectly from day to slightly chilly night as we wandered through the stalls at the Light Up Leederville carnival. Read more about our favourite street festival here!

As awesome as these sunnies are, I sadly don’t get to wear them all that often! I suppose they are a little OTT for work, and since I work 71.4% of the week that only leaves me 28.6% of my week left to flaunt them! I finished work a tad bit early last Wednesday arvo and was clearly a bit bored whilst waiting for Jinn to get home, hence the raiding of the wardrobe which led to this outfit post. We only ended up moseying down the road to grab burgers but hey…a girl’s gotta have a bit of fun sometimes, no?

Nobody knows

Now I don’t know why, but I just haven’t been a huge fan of denim jackets – until now…Maybe it’s because their often boxy shapes tend to be rather unflattering on me or they conjure up these kinds of images in my mind (you know, the bad kind of 90s fashion that is not experiencing a revival). But I just couldn’t walk past these prettily embroidered shoulders of this Nobody creation! My first attempt at trying it on wasn’t such a roaring success but with a little help from the lovely staff at Merge Subiaco this little baby eventually came home with me and boy has it made itself comfortable! Paired with a simple lace dress and my soft-as-butter shoes from Sydney label, The Horse, this has fast become my favourite summer outfit.

MYRE {not a typo!}

Wandering into the recently opened MYRE building, I was instantly hit by a wave of nostalgia. Rummaging through sales troughs for bedsheets and saying “I’m bored!” about 20 times a minute. My Mum would wander blissfully through the rows upon rows of Royal Doulton china and miniature figurines made in the likenesses of young girls in flowing gowns and flower crowns, usually stroking the heads of ducks or small puppies. We’ve all been there.
MYRE is a fresh new concept store based in the recently closed Fremantle MYER store. The old lino and carpets are the same but the new inhabitants have completely transformed and revitalised this space. Housed within are exclusively locally grown talents offering a wide variety of wares, from clothing to chocolates to furniture.
As you enter, you are greeted by gorgeous blooms and bouquets of florist, Matthew Landers. A gentle left takes you to artisan chocolatier and all-round lovely lady Sue Lewis (read more about her here). This is a perfect moment to pick up a freshly brewed cold-pour coffee served over ice. Choose from coffee beans ethically sourced from Ethiopia or Columbia (my favourite was the Ethiopian blend, sweet and mild, whilst Jinn favoured the much stronger-bodied Columbian blend). You must of course buy some of the exquisitely handmade chocolates, made from the finest and freshest organic ingredients, with some often unexpected flavour combinations, such as strawberry with jasmine, Manjimup truffle, or even Vegemite! Buy some for now and some for later.
Meander around the store and take in the likes of Jarrad Seng’s photography that capture Iceland’s beautiful volcanic rivers from above. You can also find yourself some mighty fine threads, new or vintage, from places like Common Ground, Kate and Abel (who also run the in-house cafe), and Amicus Collective.
I can’t wait for the whole complex to be reopened. There’s promise of a floor dedicated to production and even a rooftop bar! Stay posted…But in the meanwhile come show some local-small-business love at this awesome new space!

It’s okay to wear a splash of colour to work! It’s nice to get out of the habit of wearing all black, particularly now that the sun is shining and the days are getting longer. And once again it’s super-cheap-ASOS-trousers to the rescue! They fit perfectly and fulfil all my workwear criteria (read all about them here), namely style, comfort and mobility all in one. Particularly when paired with these boyish loafers, I’m all set for a day at work with the kiddies!

Ah, first world problems…What to wear to work? Having spent most of last year in hospital scrubs and the first half of this year in my Broome uniform (breezy sundresses), I was faced with this dilemma when I returned to Perth to start a job where lazing about in blue pyjamas wasn’t quite gonna cut it.
There are, however, a few considerations one needs to keep in mind when working with children!
- Mobility is key. You need to be able to get down on the ground, squat, and/or bend in awkward directions to often accommodate what a kid is doing at times.
- You need to accomplish all that whilst still keeping your modesty in check! Flashing is not recommended.
- You may be the recipient of projectiles from any number of bodily orifices at any moment, at any time. If you don’t keep your spider sense honed or you carelessly let that nappy slide, you’re gonna get what you deserve. Therefore, the words “dry clean only” and “hand wash only” are not desirable. Also, don’t wear anything too exxy, a spew stain will greatly lessen its value.
Enter ASOS to the rescue with their super stretchy, comfy and flattering peg pants. And to sweeten the deal, they cost little over $30 on sale! Spiced up with a cute belt and staple black flats you can barely tell. Tick, tick, tick. All criteria met.

I had only just barely touched down in Perth when off we set again to Darwin to celebrate a close friend’s wedding! My internal thermostat was more than happy to escape Perth’s chilly winter to bask in the warm and balmy north Australian dry season that I’ve been more accustomed to of late.
I was particularly excited to rediscover a pile of clothing from my recent travels to New York, London and Paris that had remained untouched due to Broome’s propensity to stay a constant thirty degrees Celsius as well as the generally more outdoorsy lifestyle.
So it’s no surprise that I reached for this entirely Paris-bought outfit – an appropriately sweet and floral Comptoir des Cotonniers dress paired with delicate Repetto heels, made with the softest of leathers. Their fairy princess gleam, not-too-high-but-very-ladylike heel and ultimate comfort level ensured that we were boogying on down well into the night!

Toastface Grillah {Oh Hai Perth!}

For my return back to mothership Perth, Jinn had planned an elaborate morning that was to include eating at some of the latest cool-kid hangouts, the kind that serve up dishes featuring super trendy ingredients like quinoa, kale and chia seeds. It wasn’t to be, as all I’d been craving during my six months in Broome was a huge whopping big bowl of steaming beef and beef ball pho from our regular Vietnamese joint! Craving satisfied, we wandered through our beloved city, looking at the things that had changed (oh hai new Pigeonhole store!) and the things that hadn’t, simply happy being home…
Not to be completely thwarted, Jinn managed to drag me to his next favourite hipster haunt, the awesomely named Toastface Grillah, after famed Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ghostface Killah. Not only were we treated to a scrummy Apple & Gouda toastie and a pretty decent flat white, but we had also accidentally stumbled upon a live poetry and music open mic afternoon hosted in the tiny courtyard. It was a completely new experience for me! We enjoyed the mostly contemporary poetry recital (I don’t remember T. S. Eliot or Blake ever using so many expletives!) whilst I gnawed away at my sweet and crispy package of ham, apple and grilled onions, relishing the gooey stretchiness of the toasted cheese that held it all together.
It made a perfect Perth arvo that bit more interesting – I even had a small heart attack when the MC of the recital turned to the two of us and asked if we had anything contribute! Thankfully we weren’t pressed any further after politely declining, but I was so intrigued by the little gathering that I think I may return another time, perhaps with something in my repertoire to add to this interesting bunch of folk.
Come take a wander down Grand Lane and find this hole-in-the-wall eatery that does “simple” food amazingly well. If you’re up for something a little different, go on a Saturday afternoon to listen in on or even take part in this very welcoming group of poetry lovers.
