She is a force to be reckoned with, and she’s comin’ to get you, big ol’ world. Pairing up with the equally exceptional Bec Tougas, a fellow stylist, these two concocted and masterminded Perth’s first ever official Instameet. If you’ve currently got your finger anywhere near Perth’s creative pulse, you’d feel how strong the beat and the community is becoming.

Bloggers, photographers, floral artists, graphic designers, illustrators, stylists, coffee roasters, letterpressers, jewellery makers, and generally awesome people flocked to the stylish surrounds of Empire in Highgate (did I ever mention that half our house is furnished by Empire!?). I felt like Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka’s factory! We got to meet so many people in person and put faces and real names to Instagram handles. Between the happy hubbub and chatter, our appetites and attention-deficit disorder traits were catered to with an array of mountainous cupcakes by Laura Isabella and affogatos  that were a mind-blowing collaboration between Chicho Gelato and Micrology Coffee Roasters. Drinks flowed from the back of Bar Pop’s signature orange pickup truck and from Pure Glow Cleanse’s juice bar for those health nuts amongst us. If you tired from all the talk, there was a fab photo booth replete with golden glitter by Hello Love Designs and a flower station where you could choose your blooms and have them speedily and expertly arranged into a sweet little posy by Debra Hayes.

Breathe.

And I haven’t even finished name-dropping yet.

No gathering is complete without some mighty fine examples of hand lettering by The Articulate (who also managed to snap up an exquisite marble chopping board right from under my nose – I won’t forget this, Tash!). To capture all the amazingness and catch you mid-cupcake-mouthful was Christine Lim and her partner, Ethan Ho. As if we didn’t already feel spoilt rotten, guests were also given a gift card from Origrami, those cool folk who make it their business to print out your favourite Instagram photos for you.

This mingling of Perth talents and minds was tangibly surging with positivity, possibility, and collaboration. It makes my little chest puff up with pride and joy to observe this all happening right here, right now, and we feel honoured and humbled to be in the company of such people with limitless ideas, boundless energy and talent, and a willingness to share it with others.

In the words of @shelancreatives, #perthisthenewblack.

Sandringham House

SandringhamHouse020SandringhamHouse001 SandringhamHouse012 SandringhamHouse014 SandringhamHouse028 SandringhamHouse003We came across this delightful house on Desire To Inspire the other day. Designed by Techné Architecture + Interior Design, it is a wonderful conversion of a double-fronted weatherboard house into an amazing and inviting space full of colour and energy. I love how the street frontage is subtle, with only a cheeky bright blue door and a small amount of metal cladding visible to hint at the impressive structure within. They have managed to add four extra bedrooms, an open plan living-dining area and a study, with heaps of life-bringing natural light. And to top it all off, the interior design and furniture is positively mouthwatering! (Excuse me whilst I rescue my laptop keyboard from my drool…)

Meet Rhianna May – photographer

rhiannamay1-1rhiannamay1-2rhiannamay1-5motif

So this is Rhianna. She just turned twenty one this year (I know right, shut UP!) and is already inspiring us with her spirit of open-hearted adventure, exceptional eye for photography, and shrewd business mind. What a package! What also amazes me is just how comfortable and self-assured she is in her own skin despite being professedly socially awkward – I don’t believe it for one bit! 🙂

After finishing school (not that long ago – hah!) and unsure of what to do with the big bright future in front of her, Rhi enrolled in Arts at the University of Western Australia, majoring in International Relations and Italian Studies. Her course has meandered a little thereafter, and her experiences have included a lot of travel, living in Milan for six months, and working as a legal secretary. If you ask me though, the most interesting and well-rounded people are those who do meander, each new experience lived in and savoured, perpetually adding to their sense and knowledge of self.

Now Rhianna’s first love is, in fact, writing. Her blog, The Wildest Of Dreams, was birthed whilst slightly tipsy on a vodka and orange that was admittedly mostly vodka. After some time, however, an aunt and particular harsh critic proclaimed that although the blog was lovely it really needed pictures. Rhi started off by snapping piccies with her iPhone but it wasn’t until she unearthed her mum’s old film camera (a beautiful Pentax K1000) that her true love affair with photography began.

Rhi’s blog is written with such frankness that you feel like she’s writing a letter to a very close friend. She openly muses about topics that excite her, frequently features mini projects (such as Coffee of Perth), and once in a while there’s a heartfelt ramble about life and her current challenges. These are the posts I like best. I highly recommend hopping over and following too.

Check out Rhi’s sweet photography work below. Her latest endeavour (to be featured here soon!) is one that I am wholeheartedly certain will be a runaway success. Without sharing too many spoilers before our next post, Rhi and a bunch of unimaginably talented young creatives is bringing something new and, if you ask me, downright perfect to the “wedding world”. More about this anon…

Loss and strangers

Sitting next to someone on an airplane can sometimes be awkward. Do you want to talk. Would you prefer to zone out in your secure bubble contained between your armrests, headset firmly on. You were late 40s, 5 o’clock shadow, and looked decidedly friendly (after a surreptitious side glance). So, I ventured out and tested the waters, as I’m a chronic hater of awkward silences.

So is Perth home or holiday destination for you?

Neither! You replied, amiably. You were en route to Broome to work offshore on the ships out that way.

And so I latched on to the cheery but safe subject, prattling on about how much I love Broome, and the conversation meandered agreeably to talk about travelling and bucket lists, so on and so forth. We spoke about our occupations, the bits we like, the bits we find challenging. The conversation flowed effortlessly to and fro, both refreshingly interested in each other’s life experiences and opinions.

Then inevitably we started speaking about family. You’d mentioned a son and a daughter previously so I not-so-cleverly inferred that you had two children. You paused ever so slightly, then said yes. I noted the pause but callously soldiered on. After more questions you volunteered that your eldest son passed away four years ago. We nodded commiseratively together but I didn’t delve, I could hear the pain heavy in your voice. The attention turned my way. And for the first time ever because of your honesty and compelled by the way you spoke with both feeling and calm bravery, I was able to say and acknowledge to a stranger that I had two older brothers. But that I lost one last year.

You understood. You understood why I had to stop speaking at that point. Although you didn’t say much, your compassion and sympathy were apparent. Your sentences became cropped, your voice thick with emotion. You told me that family is everything. You told me that things do get better.

And I believe you. You’ve been there. In fact, you’re still there.

Thank you, John. I might never see you again but thank you all the same from the bottom of a torn but healing heart.

Cupping with Mano a Mano

manoamano-3manoamano-8manoamano-2manoamano-5 manoamano-4 manoamano-7Join Seb from Mano a Mano for a morning session of cupping, a simple and almost ritualistic way of tasting and enjoying coffee. Seb is intensely knowledgeable and passionate about the origins of all the beans he sources, right down to the very names of the farmers that grow and harvest them.

Each cup of beans is ground, smelled, brewed, and smelled again. And finally you get to taste. The beans are sourced from all over the world, including Colombia, Kenya and Ethiopia, and all have deliciously individual characteristics, aromas and taste.

Mano a Mano means “hand to hand”. It reminds me of all the human steps that are required to ultimately bring me my perfect cuppa. Planted, picked (as bright red cherries!), dried, exported, tasted, roasted, ground.

Brewed.

Mano a Mano public cuppings are held on Saturday mornings at Gordon St Garage and are FREE (Seriously! What can you get for free these days!?!).

Get your tickets here. Order beans online here.

An afternoon with Michelle Lau

bloggingworkshop-2 bloggingworkshop-13 bloggingworkshop-1bloggingworkshop-7 bloggingworkshop-8bloggingworkshop-6bloggingworkshop-1-4 bloggingworkshop-3 bloggingworkshop-4 bloggingworkshop-11Blogging is a truly rewarding creative experience that often draws on both imagery and text to draw in readers, and can reach and be read by people all over the world. It is unique in that it is an outlet for personal expression and blog topics can range from food to fashion to politics to religion to deeply personal stories, there are few limits. As you can tell, we really dig it.

Last Saturday, Perth-based blogging maven, Michelle Lau, ran a small-group workshop during which she shared her experience and expertise in The Art of Blogging. Michelle hails from much-loved lifestyle blog, A Minute Away From Snowing. She also has the coveted job of blogging for vogue.com.au and is the social media curator for The King Street Precinct. In terms of mastery of the blogosphere and social media clout, I’m pretty sure Michelle’s your gal.

The workshop was held in the uber-hip uber-delicious Raw Kitchen in Fremantle and was organised by none other than the dynamic stylist, Stacey Clark, as part of The Creatives initiative which she is spearheading. The Creatives is a network for people in the creative industry in Perth and so far a number of wildly successful workshops such as hand lettering and leatherwork have been run in various roaming locations around the city. There is promise of seasonal dinners as well, and I personally can’t wait for these!

We had the honour and pleasure of attending as the day’s photographers and to take portraits of the workshop’s participants for use on their own blogs! Everyone was so willing and brought their own personalities to the shoot, it was such an enjoyable experience for the two of us. We’ve not had many chances to take portraits of people other than ourselves and having the chance to play with different lighting, different backdrops and different faces was a true pleasure.

To find out more about Michelle’s upcoming workshops and for other workshop inquiries by The Creatives go here or contact Stacey at stacey@staceyclarkstylist.com.

Take me back

broome-2014-1broome-2014-2broome-2014-5broome-2014-3broome-2014-6Ah Broome. The warm and sunny town reminds me of a time when life was simple. I was sent here last year for work, initially apprehensive and somewhat discomposed, then six months down the track found myself embraced by the community and way of life, and truly sad to leave. The unhurried pace was curative and a real tonic for a soul that previously searched for meaning and gratification in busyness and seemingly important jobs with very long to-do lists.

Things are different up here. Yes, there is work, but there is always time to catch up for a drink on Friday afternoon, time to take that bike ride around the port, time to go to that gym class on Tuesday evening, time to have a dip at the beach, time to watch yet another breathtaking sunset (or moonrise!), time to cast a fishing rod off the rocks. And that time isn’t the never-arriving tomorrow, it is today. Yes, we have our jobs and we do them well, but time is made and set aside to tend to ourselves. We make time to chat, consolidating old friends, connecting with new ones. There is a term frequently used up here – to have a yarn – which from my observations means to have a relaxed but meaningful exchange, with no fixed time limit or agenda, finding out more about each other, going wherever the conversation may spontaneously flow. The focus is on the person and where they are in life, often not necessarily asking them the questions that seem to be so commonly asked to define and categorise a person (like my personal unfavourite, “What do you do?”).

I spent six days in Broome just a couple of weeks ago, with the only purpose being to do just that. Have a yarn with some very dear friends and acquaint myself with some new ones too.

Let me not forget nor lose sight of the truly important things in life.

Baby it’s cold outside

Chilly mornings call for big ol’ coats and chunky scarves wrapped a minimum of three times round one’s neck.

I’m contemplating making one of these but might just be a lazybones and buy one instead.

I wish I could be as cool as her.
