Mixed bag

This was one of those outfits that I “put together” in my head whilst packing my bags for Melbourne. I’m one of those people who just can’t achieve anything unless there’s an element of stress involved. Which means I lie around the bedroom, bemoaning my lack of clothing choices for hours on end, procrastinating by trying on completely bizarre and impractical outfits, only to then madly throw random pieces of clothing at my open suitcase because I’m about to miss the plane.

Let me know what you think, but did I go a bit “cray cray” with this outfit? I was sitting having breakfast in Drugstore Espresso on Toorak Rd when I realised that I looked a tad like a little pink and yellow confection.

Anyhoos, here it is. I am never one to shrink from wearing colour, but was this a bit OTT?

Arriving in the wee hours of Friday, we nabbed some shut eye before heading out into the CBD and chowing down a hearty breakfast at Cumulus Inc, an uber trendy coffee spot which felt very Gordon St Garage-esque. A visit to Melbourne is incomplete without wandering through Hosier Lane to ogle at the psychedelic street art.

A spot of shopping (50% off at Gorman – uh, yeah!?) was followed by a completely unnecessary but completely delicious lunch at noodle and dumpling house, Hutong. This gave us enough energy to power walk into Fitzroy where many unique and carefully curated shops awaited. Highlights were Little Salon and Third Drawer Down. For dinner, we waited in the fortunately very rapidly moving queue at Mamasita, wolfed down some delectable street style corn and pulled pork tostaditas, then tumbled on back to the hotel, falling deep asleep as soon as our heads hit our pillows.

Thanks for the good times, Melbs!

One of our first stops during our quick visit to Melbourne was a trip down Hosier Lane. No cars drive down this lane and over time it has become a gallery of some of the greatest street art you’ll ever see! I just love the mish-mash of colours and styles, practically every surface adorned by a garish signature or skilfully created visage. It’s one of our favourite spots we return to regularly as it’s never the same each time and always great fun to explore!

The best things

teacups-1I instantly fell head over heels in love with these handmade teacups from Mr Sparrow – the feel of the rough clay against the palms of your hands, the cheerful irregularity in size and shape of the cups compared to each other, the cheeky glint of gold on the gorgeously rudimentary handles. Essentially, I was completely enamoured by how individually cast by hand they all were and so clearly made with care and love – you definitely feel it when you handle them.

I couldn’t wait to show them to my Mum, the lover of all homewares (she used to drag me around for hours through rows upon rows of Royal Doulton and Mikasa plates) who promptly laughed and almost scoffed when she saw them! She couldn’t believe I’d paid for something that looked so obviously handmade and rough.

Which brings me to my point.  Nowadays technology and mass production is ubiquitous, and made objects are not. But in the fifties and sixties, machine-made regularity and sleekness that could rapidly produce multiple copies was marvelled at and lauded above old and “archaic” methods. But in today’s society where we are inundated with “perfect” and identical mass-produced objects, where knowledge and skills in old handicrafts are fading and becoming scarce, I find that I deliberately seek out the imperfect and irregular, objects that clearly bear the marks and character of their maker.

Minty

rachel-gilbert-minty-1Wearing – Rachel Gilbert dress, Kate Spade shoes, J.Crew earrings, Butter London “Muggins” nailpolish

These lovely photos were taken up in the Dandenong Ranges of Victoria, the beautiful setting of a very good friend’s wedding. We snuck out whilst waiting for the bride to arrive to do a little prancing around the gorgeous greenery! The wedding was attended by all my besties from school, and one of them so kindly pointed out that this dress was reminiscent of our old school summer uniform! (See what you think here) I laughed when she said so as I did see the similarities, but I’d like to think my style has evolved a just a little since then! Certainly the untied hair “beyond the collar” and earrings that break the “plain studs” rule are a slight improvement!

Runaway

dripping-runaway-sweater-3Wearing – Karen Walker top, American Apparel skirt, Kate Spade heels (these are cute), Mno.logie clutch, Angle Dot Diamond earrings, Alister Yiap hexagon ring

I’m not really one to wear miniskirts but I completely fell for this gorgeous twirly number by American Apparel, so much so that I also got it in black! Poufy enough to look playful rather than skanky, a look I generally avoid. And the lilac colour goes surprisingly well against all those bright neon colours that are sweeping through stores this summer! Now this Karen Walker top arrived (oh how I love KW, have you noticed yet? She’s like my girlfriend)  and I instantly realised I was waaaaay too short for it (story of my life). Well, a quick roll up of the sleeves and nipping in of the waist – et voila!

How are you guys stylishly surviving the searing Perth heat?

Illuminites

illuminites13-10We decided to make the trek back into Northbridge on Friday night for that amazing Christmas gift shopping bonanza that is Illuminites! This year, there was a gigantic manmade beach in the Perth Cultural Centre, complete with deckchairs and places for kids to play, as well as a giant inflatable snow dome and a frozen ice slide inside a truck! Talk about climate confusion!

There were heaps of different stores, hand-made crafty items, arty pieces as well as the usual amazing vintage shops. We were able to meet the amazing Kelly aka Mekel from Mekel Illustration, and purchase an original artwork from her store! We also said hi to Ann from the Whiteman Park Print Shop and took a squiz at their letterpressed goods. Other most honourable mentions must go to Rachel from Freckle & Co and Eemay of Glass Gardens terrarium fame. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a good photo of their exceedingly popular stall mostly because they were overwhelmed by customers most of the time! It was a busy busy night filled with lots of people happily ticking off their Christmas lists. We almost swooned in the heat of the afternoon sun and at the dizzying heights of retail mecca but were rescued once again by the always refreshing La Paleta icypoles!

And so it was…

jinn-bday-4So Jinn has finally joined the elite three-oh club, where one becomes instantly more knowledgeable and wiser in the ways of the world, and yet is still youthful enough to be able to wear skinny jeans and play soccer three times a week. I kind of freaked out when Jinn mentioned FIFTY people were rocking up to our house for his party, but I have to say that with a little (read a lot) of help from my Mumsy, mum-in-law and sis-in-law, a wonderful Moroccan themed dinner was laid out and heartily consumed by all our guests. I also may or may not have ordered five cakes from Boucla, my fave cafe of all time…

We wish there were more photos to share of this special evening, but we were both too busy running around like crazy chooks setting tables and chatting to guests to take very many! Hopefully these pictures give you a hint of what a lovely and charming night we all had, enjoying the perfect balmy evening in the presence of many loved ones.

Happy bee-day, bozo!

By hand

I’ve long had an obsession with hand lettering – that thing you do where it looks like the most amazing calligraphy but it’s all done freestyle, kinda like drawing rather than writing. I used to doodle all through school and uni, with many a diary and textbook finding themselves covered with various cursive forms of my name and other inspirational and not-so-inspirational quotes. Hand lettering’s popularity is on the rise and rise these days, and has rekindled my love for it as well as typography and fonts.

There are some inspirational people around who make my efforts look positively like chicken-scratchings! I’ve previously posted about Dana Tanamachi, but another rising star who abides a little closer to home is Gemma O’Brien, from New South Wales. Somehow I managed to miss her exhibition down at the Fremantle Arts Centre (totally gutted) but I can console myself with this simple DIY tutorial she wrote for a pair & a spare. I’m definitely going to give this a go!

I haven’t as yet been able to find a hand lettering workshop here in Perth, but if you know of one please do let me know!

The ‘ville

light-up-leedy1-4Wearing – American Apparel top, Sparkle & Fade skirt (similar), Clover backpack from Harry & Gretel, New Kid shoes via Modcloth, Robert Marc sunglasses (similar), Naomi Murrell resin and rose gold ring, Lazy Oaf cat ring (in gold)

American Apparel does some of the greatest basics. This top is perfectly cropped and fitted, perfect for a whole bunch of my high-waisted bottoms and right on midriff-baring trend (for when I finally find my six-pack). But anyhow, this outfit took me perfectly from day to slightly chilly night as we wandered through the stalls at the Light Up Leederville carnival.
